Hawk-Eye
Hawk eye is the sports technology which is used in different
sports like cricket, football , tennis to overcome the humanly errors and to produce
more accurate and clear results , it is as effective in every sport which
involves a ball because the major function of this technology is to project the
trajectory of the ball .
It was first developed by Dr.Paul Hawkins in England . this
technology was first developed in 2001 for sport analysis in cricket .
Functionality
Hawk eye works with six or sometimes seven high performance
cameras which are placed in the playing arena or the stadium during the sport
,for tennis there are ten cameras , these cameras are installed on the six different
places covering the the whole arena , the main factor in placement of cameras
is to create an angle from where the trajectory of the ball could be calculated
properly , the visuals of cameras are then combined to create the three
dimensional representation of the ball’s path .
This technology has affected the sports a lot with its
performance and accuracy hawk eye is accurate within 5 millimeters of the
impact
Cricket
In cricket this technology was introduced in a Test match
between Pakistan and England at Lord’s Cricket ground in 2001 , later ICC
trialed a referral system where hawk eye was used in making decisions by the
third umpire if a team disagree the decision of LBW given by the field umpire
Tennis
In tennis Hawk eye was tested and approved by tennis
governing body in 2005 , this technology is being used in many world tournaments
including Wimbledon ,Davis cup , US open and Tennis Masters cup
Football
In football Hawk eye was proposed to test in 2011 to FIFA
where after tests FIFA was much satisfied by the performance and it propose the
result should be signaled to the referee within five seconds to make the
decision on the run
On 5th july 2012 this system was approved by FIFA
along with the goal line technology which determines the the whether the ball
has passed the goal line or not , the concern about the referall system was
raised when ball was not judged by the referee and goal was not given in the
worldcup quarterfinals between England and Germany.
First goal awarded by goal line technology was scored by
Eden Dzeko for Man City against Cardiff City
The company Hawk-Eye Innovations Ltd is working on the
betterment of the technology and other new methods that can improve the
accuracy .
